A foam suppression system works by mixing foam concentrate with water and applying the solution through sprinklers, nozzles, or monitors. The foam blanket suppresses flames, cuts off oxygen, and prevents re-ignition, making it effective for liquid and fuel fires.

Routine maintenance is essential to keep the system functional. NFPA recommends quarterly, semi-annual, and annual inspections. Rotaflow team offers comprehensive service plans to ensure compliance and performance.

AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) concentration is based on fluorinated surfactants and stabilisers that form an aqueous film useful for hydrocarbon fuel fires. AFFF is commonly diluted into 1%, 3% or 6% solutions. Alcohol-resistant foam concentrate is specifically designed for water-soluble fuels and polar solvents that would destroy standard AFFF or FFFP foam. The selection is not just a matter of performance level, but whether the fuel itself is compatible with the standard foam chemistry at all.

NFPA 11 defines expansion as the ratio of final foam volume to initial foam solution volume. Medium and high expansion foam concentrates are designed to expand from 20:1 to about 1000:1. Aspirator type foam generators generally top out around 250:1. So the equipment you use, not just the concentrate, has a direct bearing on the expansion ratio your system can actually achieve.

For deluge and spray-type foam-water systems (or across the design area for wet, dry, and preaction foam-water systems), NFPA 16 requires the foam solution to be designed to discharge for a minimum of 10 min over the whole protected system area.If the actual discharge exceeds the minimum design density, a corresponding reduction in duration is allowed. However, duration shall not be lowered to less than 7 minutes for any excess flow.

NFPA 16 demands that the proportioning system be able to fulfil the actual calculated system discharge demand at the right concentration – meaning the system must be capable of maintaining the proper mixing under actual operational flow rates and pressures and not simply under ideal test-bench conditions. This is important because proportioning inconsistently at genuine system demand can result in foam that is not strong enough to reduce the hazard or unnecessary waste of concentrate.

Low-expansion foam is normally used directly on the surface of a fuel to provide a foam blanket for spill or pool fires. Medium- and high-expansion foams, however, are meant to fill much larger volumes rapidly (their higher expansion ratios mean much greater foam volume per unit of solution), which is why they are chosen for applications where rapid flooding of an enclosed or large open area is more important than precision on the surface blanket.
