NFPA 12 requires the refrigeration system on a low-pressure CO2 storage container to be capable of maintaining 300 psi (2068 kPa) in the pressure container under the highest expected ambient temperature, and where heating is required instead, it must maintain 0°F (−18°C) under the lowest expected ambient temperature. This is why low-pressure CO2 systems are engineered around a controlled storage temperature rather than simply being a static tank — the refrigeration/heating equipment is functionally part of the fire suppression system itself.
NFPA 12 requires lockout valves — manually operated valves in the discharge piping that prevent agent flow to a specific hazard — to be installed on all systems where carbon dioxide could migrate and create a hazard to personnel during maintenance or testing. A service disconnect switch specifically cannot be substituted for a lockout valve, since cutting electrical power doesn’t prevent the stored agent from still discharging into the space.
NFPA 12 states that when protection must be maintained during a lockout time, a person shall be assigned as a “fire watch” with appropriate portable or semi-portable firefighting equipment or a mechanism to restore protection. That fire watch shall likewise be tied to a continuously monitored location and the authorities responsible for fire protection continuity shall be notified of both the lockout and the subsequent restoration.
NFPA 12 requires that prior to testing or maintenance of a fixed carbon dioxide system, all personnel be evacuated from the protected space — a direct reflection of CO2’s asphyxiation hazard at fire-suppression concentrations, which is why even routine maintenance work triggers a mandatory evacuation requirement rather than being treated as a low-risk activity.
NFPA 12 requires predischarge delays to be accurate within +20 percent/−0 percent of their rated time at 70°F (21°C) — and delays outside that tolerance must be replaced. This matters because the predischarge delay is what gives personnel time to evacuate or activate an abort before CO2 floods the space, so a delay running short defeats the entire purpose of the safety feature.
