Underground Fire Standpipe System Installation – LRT Expansion Project, Edmonton, Alberta
Project Overview:
Rotaflow was selected to fabricate, test, protect, and install a critical underground fire standpipe system for a major LRT expansion project in Edmonton, Alberta. The system was designed to provide long-term fire protection infrastructure within tunnel environments, helping support the safety of transit passengers, maintenance personnel, and future system users.
The project included the installation of underground fire protection mains connected to vertical standpipes and fire hose valve locations throughout the tunnel network. Given the expected lifespan of the transit infrastructure, durability and corrosion resistance were key considerations throughout the design and construction process.
To maximize system longevity, Rotaflow utilized 304 stainless steel piping combined with a multi-layer corrosion protection system designed to withstand challenging underground conditions for decades to come.

The Challenge:
This project was completed within a highly active construction environment where multiple contractors and disciplines were working simultaneously to meet critical transit infrastructure deadlines.
The installation involved underground excavation, tunnel construction activities, and coordination with other infrastructure systems throughout the project corridor. Limited working space within tunnel areas required careful planning and sequencing to maintain productivity while meeting strict safety and quality requirements.
Weather conditions also presented challenges throughout construction. Rain, muddy site conditions, and changing access routes required the project team to continuously adapt while maintaining installation schedules and quality standards.
At the same time, every component of the fire protection system needed to undergo rigorous testing and inspection to ensure long-term reliability once the transit system becomes operational.
Rotaflow’s Solution:
After reviewing the site layout and operational requirements, Rotaflow proposed an API-compliant fire water deluge system in place of a conventional spray system for the railcar loading stations.
This approach allowed the fire protection design to work within the space limitations of the site while maintaining clear and unobstructed railcar operations. By selecting a deluge-based solution, Rotaflow was able to provide effective fire protection coverage without introducing additional congestion within the loading areas.
For the pressure vessels, Rotaflow designed protection using fixed firewater monitors, offering dedicated firewater coverage tailored to those specific hazards.
The design also incorporated strategically located fire hydrants and future expansion connection points, based on locations identified in coordination with the client.
Rotaflow developed a comprehensive fabrication, quality control, and installation strategy focused on long-term performance and reliability.
All stainless-steel standpipe assemblies were fabricated under controlled conditions and subjected to multiple levels of inspection before being delivered to site. The team implemented a detailed quality assurance program that included dimensional verification, weld inspections, hydrostatic testing, and corrosion protection testing.
To enhance service life, Rotaflow applied a multi-layer corrosion protection system incorporating STOPAQ wrapping, Ethafoam insulation, and protective jacketing. This approach helps protect underground piping from moisture, environmental exposure, and long-term deterioration.
Throughout the project, Rotaflow maintained close coordination with project stakeholders to address evolving site conditions while keeping installation activities on schedule.
