NFPA 20 clearly indicates that pressure maintenance (jockey) pumps do not need to be listed, but they do need to be approved. This is a big difference from the main fire pump itself which does need to be listed . This is because the function of the jockey pump is to maintain the pressure under normal conditions not to provide the fire suppression flow itself .
NFPA 20 specifies that the pressure maintenance pump be sized to refill the system pressure lost to allow leakage and normal pressure drops, with a rated capacity not less than the system normal leakage rate and discharge pressure adequate to maintain the target fire protection system pressure. In practice, this implies that jockey pump sizing is determined by the particular leakage characteristics of the system, not some generic proportion of the main pump’s capacity.

NFPA 20 requires suction piping to be flushed at the rate specified in its flushing table, or the hydraulically calculated water demand rate, whichever is greater — but where the available water supply can’t provide that flow, the flushing rate must still equal or exceed 150 percent of the connected fire pump’s rated flow. This means a limited water supply doesn’t lower the flushing requirement below a defined floor, it just changes which benchmark applies.
