Unlike traditional sprinklers, they work by rapidly cooling flames and removing heat energy while also displacing oxygen, making them highly effective for environments with sensitive equipment.

No. Water mist systems use a low-volume water supply, often requiring only a small pump or cylinder-based system. This makes them suitable for areas where large water reserves or traditional piping systems are not feasible.

NFPA 750 defines systems by the pressure of the distribution piping. Low-pressure systems are those systems operating at 175 psi (12.1 bar) or less. Intermediate-pressure systems are those systems operating at pressures over 175 psi but less than 500 psi (34.5 bar). High-pressure systems are those systems operating at 500 psi (34.5 bar) or above. This classification indicates directly the suitable method of hydraulic computation for the design of the system.

NFPA 750 states that for systems without additives and with working pressures not greater than 175 psi, either the standard hydraulic calculation method or an alternate velocity pressure (Hazen-Williams based) method can be applied, while only the standard method is permitted for intermediate- and high-pressure systems. The pressure classification is not only a design label, it determines whether an engineering calculation approach is even permissible for that system.

NFPA 750 defines Dv as the volume median diameter of the water mist droplets, which is a metric for how tiny the water is atomised. The control of fire by a water mist system is very dependent on droplet size distribution. Finer droplets have more surface area to absorb heat quickly and they are also more effective in oxygen displacement. That is why droplet characterisation testing is part of the evaluation and listing of these systems.

NFPA 750 particularly specifies that where the design goal is fire extinguishment (not only suppression/control), attention must be given to both the possibility for deep-seated flames as well as the potential for smouldering fires, since these behave differently than an open burning fire. For Class B (flammable liquid) dangers, the standard also includes an evaluation of fuel loading, fuel configuration, flash point, and burning rate and preburn time because all of these impact how the characteristics of the fire develop before suppression begins.

Fire suppression is described by the NFPA 750 as a major reduction in the heat release rate of the fire and the prevention of fire regrowth. This is a much lower bar than total extinguishment, and the distinction is important because a system designed simply to suppress a fire (control the heat and prevent spread) may be designed differently – and may leave residual burning – than a system designed to fully extinguish it, which is why the design objective needs to be defined clearly before a water mist system is specified for a given hazard.
