Inergen is a mixture of 52% nitrogen, 40% argon and 8% carbon dioxide, the same as the IG-541 inert gas agent of NFPA 2001. Since it is an inert gas rather than a halocarbon, NFPA 2001 requires that inert gas agents have a discharge time of no more than 120 seconds to reach 85 percent of the design concentration — a different discharge time standard than halocarbon agents such as FK-5-1-12, which are governed by a separate discharge time definition based on achieving 95 percent of the agent mass.

As per NFPA 2001, the NOAEL for FK-5-1-12 is 10.0 percent and no observed adverse effect level is established beyond that with the LOAEL being listed as greater than 10.0 percent, making it one of the safer clean agents with a better safety margin, and is one of the reasons it is approved for use in normally occupied spaces.

NFPA 2001 links the duration of permitted human exposure directly to the design concentration of the inert gas system: concentrations below 43% (around 12% oxygen equivalent) allow for exposure up to 5 minutes, concentrations between 43–52% restrict exposure to 3 minutes, and concentrations between 52–62% necessitate limiting exposure to below 30 seconds and are restricted to normally unoccupied areas. Oxygen depletion at that level presents an immediate hazard. Therefore, at concentrations more than 62%, the standard limits use to locations where personnel are never exposed to the discharge at all.

As a halocarbon clean agent, FK-5-1-12 is designed to be delivered at concentrations that are below levels that are harmful to human exposure, but above those needed to achieve fire suppression. As a clean agent, FK-5-1-12 leaves no residue upon discharge, which is important in a paint booth environment where residue could affect uncured finishes or damage sensitive spray equipment. FK-5-1-12 is also evaluated against the NFPA 2001 NOAEL/LOAEL framework.

Periodically, NFPA 2001 calls for puff testing (24-month intervals), which includes a functional test of all alarms, controls and time delays associated with the system — verifying not only that the agent supply is intact, but that the entire detection and release sequence still works properly as designed. This is critical in an operational environment such as a paint booth where dust, overspray and equipment vibration can affect system components over time.
