FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A deluge system uses open nozzles and activates simultaneously over a wide area when triggered, while a sprinkler system has closed nozzles that activate individually based on heat detection

Deluge systems are typically installed in high-hazard areas such as oil refineries, chemical plants, power generation facilities, and storage terminals where rapid fire spread is a concern.

NFPA 15 requires system actuation valves to have a manual mechanism of actuation that is independent of the automatic release system—so the system can still be activated if detection or automatic actuation fails. Manual controls also are limited to not requiring more than 40 lbf of pull force or more than 14 inches of travel to work, so that emergency activation is quick and accessible under stress.

NFPA 15 specifies that flow from any single nozzle (of the smallest installed orifice size) or any group of non-automatic nozzles must cause an audible on premises alarm to be activated within 90 seconds of flow beginning. The alarm of a separate detection system which activates the water spray system shall also be independently operated of water flow so that the operators would be aware that the detection system fired even if flow is delayed or halted.

NFPA 15 mandates the observation of the discharge pattern of each spray nozzle to determine that no nozzles are plugged, that each is appropriately positioned and that patterns are unobstructed to wet the desired surfaces. Water supply performance verification is performed by taking pressure readings at the hydraulically most remote nozzle and at the system actuation valve and comparing them to the original design values.

NFPA 15 requires that the system actuation valves themselves be listed, and any accessories used to operate that valve must also be listed and compatible with it – meaning a facility can’t swap in an unlisted or mismatched accessory component, even if it appears to function correctly, without compromising code compliance.

Not always. NFPA 15 does not mandate a fire department connection for systems in remote locations where fire department assistance is not readily available, for large capacity systems exceeding the pumping capacity of the fire department or for ultra-high speed water spray systems, as in each case the fire department connection would not provide any significant increase in the protection capability of the system.
