Lack of proper maintenance is one of the leading reasons for fire sprinkler system failures. Fire sprinkler systems shall be properly inspected, tested, and maintained (ITM) in accordance with NFPA 25, Standard for Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems. Systems exposed to cold weather are especially vulnerable.

When not properly maintained, fire protection systems can freeze, burst, and fail to function entirely if needed. - Adherence to a regular inspection schedule as determined by the needs of the system.
- Execution of any special investigations or tests that can assess the performance of the devices and equipment.
- Exercise of due diligence in the repair of devices and equipment.
- Assurance that all personnel involved in maintenance are properly trained to correctly execute the procedures for inspection, testing, and maintenance of equipment
